• Geminid Meteor
• Blue Winter Night
• In early March, Comet Panstarrs rounded the sun and became visible in the northern hemisphere. Even though it was quite bright at magnitude 0, it was a challenge to see. It was only visible for a short time after sunset, and then it slipped beneath the horizon. This shot was taken on March 13th from Gibraltar Rock, Wisconsin, which is a 400 foot high bluff with a great view to the west. This comet will not return to the solar system for 106,000 years.

• North-Northeast winds blowing across Lake Michigan were causing high waves on this day in October. I went down to a small beach in Pleasant Prairie to get some pictures. In addition to the dark clouds and high winds, it was also raining.

• Fallen leaves accumulate around a small waterfall in Pewit's Nest State Natural Area, Wisconsin. This is the first of 3 waterfalls on Skillet Creek as it flows through this deep and narrow gorge.
Creekside Leaves
• This is the biggest and last waterfall on Skillet Creek as it flows through Pewit's Nest State Natural Area. The fall colors were at their peak and the orange leaves were contrasting with the green moss on the sandstone walls. This deep and narrow gorge is located just outside of Baraboo, Wisconsin.

• The sun shines over a meadow in the Kettle Moraine State Forest of Wisconsin as cumulus clouds move across the sky. This is a popular mountain biking area with many miles of trails built for that purpose.
• Wisconsin has it's very own version of Gibraltar Rock. This cliff is near the town of Lodi and provides scenic views of the farmland 450 feet below. You can also see Lake Wisconsin, which has the only free ferry in Wisconsin.

Autumn Gorge
• Road to Gibraltar
• Just outside of Baraboo, Wisconsin, Skillet Creek carves a deep gorge. This is the first of several waterfalls in an area known as Pewit's Nest.

• Devil's Lake is a small lake in Baraboo, Wisconsin that it is surrounded on both sides by 500 foot high bluffs. The trails in this state park provide some of the most beautiful views in the state. Even though it was cloudy, the fall colors were amazing on this day in early October. This view is from the west bluff looking to the north end of the lake.
Devil's Lake Westside
• The Baraboo Hills burst into color in early October. Devil's Lake State Park is the most visited park in the state of Wisconsin and for good reason. There are many scenic views such as this when you hike to the top of the bluffs.

• Bald Bluff is a 200 foot hill near Whitewater, Wisconsin. The top of the bluff provides great views to the west as the sun sets. Hundreds of years ago, Native Americans would use this bluff for smoke signals. This view was about halfway up along the trail.
Evening at Bald Bluff
• Near the center of town in Presque Isle, Wisconsin, lies a small park on Little Horsehead Lake. I loved the variety of colors in the trees surrounding the lake.
• After the northern lights began to fade and the clouds cleared, a strange wave pattern became visible in the sky. This is airglow, a chemical reaction that occurs at the same altitude as the aurora, but it's a separate process. This night was the only time I've ever seen it with the naked eye. I'm pretty sure it was caused by gravity waves from powerful severe thunderstorms that impacted Illinois earlier in the evening.

• If you have never seen the aurora, you should definitely make it a goal. This was a once in a lifetime show for me as I have never seen a better geomagnetic storm. I was only in Wisconsin but it felt like I was in Alaska. The aurora was pulsating, moving rapidly and it covered much of the sky. Most of my pictures were taken with a 10mm lens which tells you just how much of the sky was filled with color. This was taken from the top of Blue Mound, which is the highest point in southern Wisconsin.
