Big Cypress National Preserve was filled with many of these anhinga birds. They are also known as snakebirds. When hunting for fish, this bird will submerge most of its body underwater. Only the long neck and head will stick out. From a distance it can resemble a snake ready to strike. Unlike ducks, this bird does not have an oil gland to waterproof its feathers. This is an advantage that allows it to dive underwater for long periods. But it's also a disadvantage because they must dry themselves in the sun or else they have difficulty flying.
