Glowing Peaks and Comet
At first the brightest comet in years had the view diminished by a poorly timed full moon. But on this night a later moonrise time finally allowed a mere 15 minutes of darkness. That’s all that was needed to reveal a long spectacular tail amid stripes of green airglow. Clouds threatened to block the view, but they stayed clear enough. A dusting of snow from days earlier remained on the highest peaks of the Bighorn Mountains. When the moon hit the opposite horizon the white peaks were painted gold like a late-night dawn. As the sky brightened, the comet faded while it sunk lower in the west.
