  • The last sunlight of the day shines on rock formations in the Terry Badlands.
    Golden Pyramid
  • It was a warm summer night at the Terry Badlands. I took this self-portait just before going to sleep at 1AM.
    Warm Montana Night
  • It was a colorful sunrise a the Terry Badlands. Scattered clouds lit up in every direction. The clouds also kept the morning cool before another very hot day.

  • While driving the Calypso Trail near Terry, Montana, I passed by this area of rust-colored badlands.

  • Above the village of Chamonix in the French Alps lies the 9km long Argentière Glacier. From up close, the movement of this glacier can be seen in real time as chunks of ice shift and break apart. The river of ice flows all the way down to an elevation of 2,133m (7,000 ft) where it stops at a cliff. Dozens of glaciers encircle the Mont Blanc massif, the highest mountain in Western Europe. Their ice covers a total area of 170 km² (42 mi²). At the head of the valley on the upper right is Mont Dolent, which forms the triple border of France, Switzerland, and Italy.
    Glaciated Alps
  • This is the lowest part of the Argentière glacier at about 2,133m (7,000ft). The compacted ice was sliding down this cliff, creating a dramatic view. At the top left is the 3,824m (12,545ft) peak, Aiguille du Chardonnet.

  • The views opened up as I reached the summit of Big Pryor Mountain. East Pryor Mountain can be seen in the distance.

  • The Circle Park loop trail west of Buffalo, Wyoming, passes by over a dozen named and unnamed lakes. I chose to camp at Old Crow Lake because it had a great view of the 12,324 foot high Bighorn Peak 3 miles away. At sunrise the peak took on a soft pink glow which was reflected in the outlet of the lake.

  • During the Perseid Meteor Shower a satellite flared brightly above Beartooth Butte.
    Not a Meteor
  • At nearly 11,000 feet in elevation, the Beartooth Highway is the highest road in the Northern Rockies. The scenic 68 mile byway starts near Red Lodge, Montana, and leads to the northeast entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Summers are very short in this harsh alpine zone. It was stormy when I drove up a couple weeks ago. Once I reached Beartooth Pass, a mix of rain, snow, and graupel was falling from the sky. But I knew a rainbow was likely as soon as the sun came back out. So I put on a rain jacket and climbed up this pile of rocks to get a better view. When the rainbow first appeared, it was so close and vivid it felt like I could reach out and touch it. But it only lasted a few minutes as the storm moved away and the sun quickly melted the snow and graupel that coated the ground.

  • Fireflies fly in front of a tree at Blue Mounds State Park in Minnesota. The stars of the milky way shine in the sky above.
    The Dark Tree
  • A beam of sunlight shines in between passing clouds at Holland Lake, Montana. A thunderstorm had just passed through and patches of fog were moving across the mountains.
    Storm and Sunbeam
  • The last climbers repelled down the south face of Devils Tower soon after twilight faded. First Perseus rose to the northeast, followed by Arcturus, the 4th brightest star in the sky. Satellites slowly came and went while meteors vaporized at a much faster speed. The aurora painted its colors on an invisible canvas, undetectable to my eye for the most part. One glow soon replaced another when the crescent moon rose at midnight. In many previous visits I’ve scouted all over the national monument looking for the best vantage points. This patch of prairie that I marked on my map is barely within the park boundary. Dodging deadfall, making my way across a steep slope and up and over a cliff is hard enough during the day, doubly so at night. I kept waiting for a big aurora display to give me a reason to come back here. That never happened, despite the forecast. But even an ordinary night is worth experiencing at an extraordinary place like this. Those who only visit Devils Tower during the day miss out on half the scenery.
    More Than a Meteor
  • The views of Ann Lake in the North Cascades kept getting better as I climbed up to Heather Pass. But sunlight was getting scarce as rain showers moved in.

  • Spray Falls is a 354 feet high waterfall found on the northwest side of Mt Rainier. You can hear it from far away and as the name implies, I kept having to wipe the water droplets off of my lens.

  • Cloud Cap Summit on the north side of Mount Hood was my last stop on my 10 day road trip through the Pacific Northwest. The skies up here at 6,000 feet were exceptionally clear. The thick smoke that had been present for my whole trip finally settled into the valleys. After sunset the moonlight looked amazing on the glaciers. Jupiter was nearly touching the top of the mountain.
    Twilight On Mount Hood
  • I found it hard to stop hiking this day, putting in 17 miles by the time I got back to my car. It was my last evening in Washington, and the views were incredible from the Sunrise area of Mount Rainier National Park. This view is from First Burroughs Mountain, looking towards Second Burroughs Mountain and the glaciers beyond.
    The Trail Beckons
  • At nearly 2 miles above sea level in the Cloud Peak Wilderness, there is not much soil to be found, it is mostly rock. But the wildflowers grow wherever they can in between boulders.
    Growing Between Boulders
  • After driving for 12 hours I arrived in eastern Washington. Smoke from a nearby fire was limiting visibility over the surrounding farmland. But I knew it would lead to a very red sunset, I just had to find somewhere to shoot it. I started looking for an old barn, but instead came across this church. I liked the way it was situated between the golden wheat fields. My legs were shredded a bit as I tried to find the right spot to frame the sun. A farmer was harvesting the field as I took this, one day later and there would only be dirt instead of wheat.
    Sun And Steeple
  • Standing at 4,808 m (15,774 ft) high, Mont Blanc is the highest point in Western Europe. Dozens of glaciers encircle the massif, with their ice covering a total area of 170 km² (42 mi²). The peak with the tower on the upper right is Aiguille du Midi, which is accessible by a cable car.

  • The colors of sunset are reflected in Old Crow Lake in the Cloud Peak Wilderness.

  • Great River Bluffs State Park provides a scenic view of the Mississippi River nearly 500 feet below. A much smaller river called the Black River flows in from Wisconsin and meets in a delta. Light rain was falling on this overcast day.<br />
